Objectivity as Independence

چکیده
Abstract Building on Nozick's invariantism about objectivity, I propose to define scientific objectivity in terms of counterfactual independence. will argue that such a independence account is (a) able overcome the decisive shortcomings original and (b) applicable three paradigmatic kinds (that is, as replication, robustness, Mertonian universalism).

"Just say no": experts' late withdrawal from cases to preserve independence and objectivity.
An expert's decision to withdraw from a case at a late stage is an important and serious step with both forensic and ethical consequences. Preservation of a mutual right to terminate services at will is an essential (but all too often neglected) element of forensic work that can aid in immunizing the expert from threats to independence and objectivity. The authors examine the foundations of suc...
متن کاملComplexity Barriers as Independence
After many years of effort, the main questions of complexity theory remain unresolved, even though the concepts involved are simple. Understanding the main idea behind the statement of the “P vs NP” problem does not require much background (“is it easier to check answers than to produce them?”). Yet, we are as far from resolving it as ever. Much work has been done to unravel the intricate struc...
متن کاملMulti-objectivity as a Tool for Constructing Hierarchical Complexity
This paper presents a novel perspective to the use of multiobjective optimization and in particular evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO) as a measure of complexity. We show that the partial order feature that is being inherited in the Pareto concept exhibits characteristics which are suitable for studying and measuring the complexities of embodied organisms. We also show that multi-o...
متن کاملGirth, minimum degree, independence, and broadcast independence
An independent broadcast on a connected graph $G$is a function $f:V(G)to mathbb{N}_0$such that, for every vertex $x$ of $G$, the value $f(x)$ is at most the eccentricity of $x$ in $G$,and $f(x)>0$ implies that $f(y)=0$ for every vertex $y$ of $G$ within distance at most $f(x)$ from $x$.The broadcast independence number $alpha_b(G)$ of $G$is the largest weight $sumlimits_{xin V(G)}f(x)$of an ind...
متن کاملObjectivity in Historical Studies
Methodological restriction brings in its wake invalidity and objectivity in various branches of human seiences. By study the objections concerning the objectivity in historical studies and historiography and contemporary version of science as the background of such objections makes clear that this version of induction and objectivity mingled with bigoty and exteoimism. As it is conceived no ...
